What is twill?

Along with satin and plain weave, twill is one of the three original weave types used in textiles. "Twill" doesn't refer to a certain type of fabric fiber, but to a specific type of weave that creates a diagonal pattern. In contrast, satin and plain weaves have straight grains.

The fabric has been woven in a twill pattern for thousands of years, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of this fabric. However, the word "twill" is a modern variant of the Old English "twili", which is a half adoption of the Latin word "bilix". As such, twill is often associated with British culture, although the fabric has been woven in other cultures for much longer.

There are many different ways to weave twill, which are still considered twill. Essentially, as long as diagonal lines are visible in the final fabric, the fabric is considered a twill weave, even though it may be structurally different from other fabric types of the same name.
